My experience with Lupin III was a bit different from the hosts'. I read the original Arsene Lupin short stories when I was a kid (thanks to some old magazines in my grandma's apartment). So when I saw the second anime on Adult Swim, I was thrown off a bit. But before long, I realized that Arsene Lupin and Lupin the Third are different characters, and expecting the later to be like the former was a bit foolish, and I was able to enjoy the show on its own matters.
The anime that aired on Adult Swim is pretty much my only exposure to the character. I knew that movies existed for a while, but I never tracked them down. I had no idea that there was an earlier anime - and a live-action movie - until fairly recently, when I looked up Lupin III on TV Tropes.
(I have been intrigued by The Woman Called Fujiko Mine. I've been meaning to track it down and watch it for a while, but it just keeps slipping down my ladder of priorities).
As for the live-action movie... It does sound like the sort of slapsticky comedy I would enjoy. And it's nice to hear you guys talk about a movie that didn't make you cringe/facepalm/confused.
That outfit Lupin is sporting in this movie... I didn't expect faithfulness to the manga/anime, but this cartoony in a whole other way. Then again, these were the 70s.
I'm sure we said it in the episode, but I'll say it again. Castle of Cagliostro is a must see, Lupin fan or not. It's also a popular enough anime that older releases shouldn't be too hard to find for cheap or possibly even for rent at the library.
I second definitely recommending Cagliostro, Strannik. It requires no prior knowledge of the characters, and is just a damn amazing animated film overall.
I third the recommendation of Castle of Cagliostro. Not only is it a Lupin III movie, it's a Hayazaki movie. My only complaint about it as a Lupin III is not enough Fujiko. Speaking of whom, that's a good looking actress for Fujiko, and Jigen's hat is right on, even if his costume's color scheme is too light. Now, where's Goemon?
