Well, I'm getting this one in just under the wire. Great episode. It sounds like you three have been doing this together for years.
Here's my take on the whole (mercifully short-lived) "Diceman" phenomenon. The late 80s was when we really saw "political correctness" begin to spread. I think that in pop culture, just as in physics, for every action there's an equal and opposite reaction. I don't think that Clay's audience were all a bunch of lunk heads who didn't get the joke. I think they were merely seeking refuge from the onslaught of political correctness; which to be fair was often just as reprehensible as Clay IMO. I don't think they really believed that stuff any more than he did. Most of them, anyway.
As for the movie. Yeah, it always felt like Clay's schtick was grafted onto it in a cumbersome sort of way. I haven't seen it in years, but I always thought it was a fairly entertaining slice of early 90s cheese.
I agree to an extent, though there's very few audiences you can paint a broad brush on as far as what they're getting out of a performance. That said, I think you underestimate how many lunkheads were / are out there. In my line of work, I meet thousands.
Yeah, re-reading my comment, I made it sound like I thought that his entire audience was in on the joke. No doubt there were an alarming number of people out there who took what Dice said as gospel.
I was a teenager at the time and even I knew it was an act. Maybe I'm giving his audience too much credit.
